Sophie's Birth Story

Almost a week ago (tomorrow) I gave birth to our newest addition Sophia Lynn Ruth Balk! She is absolutely perfect in every way.

Her birth story goes a little something like this:

Tuesday December 27th, 2011 around 2pm I started feeling achy, my back hurt and I was extra tired. By 6pm my back hurt consistently but nothing I couldn’t sit or breathe through. Jesica and I were sending text messages back and forth (and after quite some nagging from her and my Mom) I decided it was time to at least get this back ache checked out in Labor & Delivery.

We got to up to triage at 7:50pm and when they checked me I was only 2cm. I can’t lie, I was so disappointed! I was walking around for weeks with Hannah at 4cm so I figured “real” labor was quite a bit away! The nurse didn’t say much but hooked me up to the monitors and watched the contractions come and go in little hills. My blood pressure was elevated so they made me sit in bed for an hour, run some labs to make sure I wasn’t developing pre-eclampsia and then after the hour was over they would re-check me to see if I had progressed any. I called my Mom and she came up to the hospital because the high blood pressure scared me a bit! After the hour, which seemed to drag on forever, the nurse came back in and checked me again. This time it was noted that I had progressed and I was now 3.5 cm dilated and 50% effaced. So I was sent out to walk the halls for 45 min and they would re-check me again.

They took so much “caution” in labeling me “in labor” because my dr’s due date for Sophia was 1-12-12 so I was 37 weeks 5 days and they wanted to make sure I was really in labor.

I was unhooked from the monitors and my Mom, PJ and I set off to walk the halls of the 3rd floor. I was at this point in quite a bit of discomfort but still nothing terrible. I was really thinking I was going to be sent right home as soon as I got back to the room! Low and behold, when I got back and the nurse yet again came and checked me, I was 5 cm and 60% effaced and was informed I wouldn’t be leaving without my baby girl! I was so terrified I started shaking. I really didn’t think I was in labor!

I got settled into delivery room 7 and waited for the doc to come in. My dr wasn’t in the hospital yet, so I got to see her resident. I really thought I would be able to have a Pitocin free delivery, something I had not yet experienced. After the epidural and some time they decided to give me Pitocin because I hadn’t progressed any more. My pitocin free delivery flew out the window, and fast!

From about 11pm that night to 1pm the next day I was 5cm and 60% effaced despite Pitocin, hard contractions (thank God for the epidural) and massssive shakes. They had broken my water early Wednesday morning (around 10am) but still nothing. I was exhausted, discouraged and nervous because I hadn’t progressed and Sophie hadn’t moved down.  I didn’t want to have a c-section. I was checked at 1:05pm and was still 5cm. By then I just wanted to cry. My dr said, “Now I’m going down to the cafeteria and watch you’ll progress from 5 to finish in no time” Everyone kept saying, “Don’t be discouraged, you’ll go from 5 to done in the blink of an eye” It wasn’t helping, even though I know they meant well!

Finally at 1:20 pm I felt funny. I didn’t have the pressure they told me about, but I felt as though I had skipped that pressure and she was going to fall right out! I hit the nurse button (several times I might add) and she came in. Not only was I ready to push, but Sophie was RIGHT there and she had to tell me to NOT push and just breathe deep! They paged my dr and quickly finished getting the room ready. My dr wasn’t there so the nurse grabbed the attending on the floor and he didn’t even have time to get all gowned up before she was fully crowning.

After 1 push they realized her arm was over her head, causing not only the back labor but for me to be in labor for so long without progressing because her arm was stopping her from moving down. The doctor told me in a very serious voice to not push and completely relax. I tried as hard as I could to relax! Any woman who has given birth knows how impossible it is to relax! They fixed her arm and in 2 small pushes she was out! My doctor made it up right after she was born.

With my Mom on one side of me and Sophia's proud Daddy on the other Sophia was born December 28th 2011 at 1:38pm weighing 6lbs 15oz and 19 inches long.

With the birth of Sophie our family was finally complete and we’re doing amazing. I thank God for the opportunity to be a mother to another little girl and that everyone is healthy.

And before I forget (because I got a little wrapped up in her birth story)… I am so very thankful for Sophie's Grammy, Auntie Emily, Aunt Jesica and Uncle Tyler for coming and staying at the hospital all night long and being such great support for us! We are blessed.
