the breakdown

Me:
I have had a constant headache from Sunday thru today. I have had less than 5 hours sleep every night (5 hours being the MOST on Sunday night to absolutely no sleep on Monday night). If it’s not one girl it’s the other.

Sophie:
Sophia has an ear infection; she went to urgent care on Sunday night. They prescribed amoxicillin and ibuprofen. Tuesday morning she had her normal meds and the amoxicillin and we went about our day. About an hour later she started breaking out in a pin point rash from her neck down. I took all her clothes off, had her sit in her diaper on my lap and watched her. Another 5 minutes later her face started swelling up and covered with hives.

I called our family doctor and asked to speak directly to the nurse. The receptionist said she was busy and I quickly explained the issue. After fighting with the woman and being put on hold she came back to tell me that the nurse would call me right back. I waited. I called back after waiting an hour only to hear that they didn’t prescribe the amoxicillin so what exactly did I want them to do and I should call the hospital who prescribed it. I was furious! I explained –again to the receptionist- that I did not have a car to take her in to sparrow but it did not warrant a 911 call because she was having no difficulty breathing. She said she would speak to the doctor directly and call me back.

In the mean time I was so furious that I called sparrow hospital. I again quickly & efficiently explained the symptoms and that I was sure it was a reaction to the antibiotics because Hannah had a lesser reaction when she was a baby and is allergic to penicillin. She went and got a doctor who came to the phone, asked me a whole bunch of questions, looked up Sophia’s file and had me describe what the symptoms looked like. She asked if I had given Benadryl. Because I didn’t know the dosage I said I did not. She gave me the dosage and told me that she would wait on the phone while I gave her the Benadryl. When I came back she told me she called in a new antibiotic, put that she was allergic to penicillin on her chart and ordered a steroid to help with the hives. After detailed instructions of what we were to do for the next 24 hours I thanked her 50 times over and we said goodbye.

The receptionist called back from our family practice another 45 minutes AFTER I got off the phone with sparrow hospital to tell me that the doctor said she needed to come in but that they didn’t have any openings until the next day so I should just take her in to sparrow.
Safe to say we are shopping for NEW doctors for the whole family.

Since then Sophia’s ear infection seems to be improving but at the same time her reflux has gotten worse again. She is now up to the dose she is supposed to be for her weight, yet we have had to add yet another medicine –for a total of 3 meds- to try to keep her reflux under control.

Hannah:
Hannah has been having fevers, restless legs & growing pains every night. She now has a white tongue with ulcers on it. The good thing is that she can explain what hurts; the bad thing is she doesn’t understand why or that we sometimes just can’t help.

Phillip:
Phillip for the most part has been pretty good. His actions this past week pale in comparison to those of his sisters.

PJ:
I’m not going to speak for him, but overall he seems pretty good. At least he’s sleeping!

Just hoping, praying and begging for things to get better.
